The concept of the show is based around WWE's established Hell in a Cell match, in which competitors fight inside a 20-foot-high roofed cell structure surrounding the ring and ringside area. Each main event match of the card is contested under the Hell in a Cell stipulation. Hell in a Cell was chosen over No Escape, Locked Up and Rage in a Cage.
Since its origin, the event has been held only in indoor arenas in the United States. Championship bouts are scheduled on every card, with the lower-tier titles featured on the undercard and the top-tier featured on the main card. Under the Brand Extension, WWE assigns its performers to either Raw or SmackDown, which cause matches to be set up between wrestlers on the same show.[

Hell in a Cell will feature professional wrestling matches which involve different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that are played out on WWE's television programs. Wrestlers will portray villains or heroes as they follow a series of events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.
The main rivalry from Raw involves the WWE Championship. On September 18, 2011, John Cena defeated Alberto Del Rio at Night of Champions to become the ten-time WWE Champion. On the following night's episode of Raw, WWE COO Triple H announced the first-ever Triple Threat Hell in a Cell match, in which Cena will defend his title against Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk.
The main rivalry from SmackDown involves the World Heavyweight Championship. On September 18, 2011, Mark Henry defeated Randy Orton at Night of Champions to win his first ever World Title. On the following night's episode of Raw, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long announced that Orton would invoke his rematch clause at Hell in a Cell, and that the rematch would take place inside the said structure.
For 14 years now, Hell in a Cell has been one of the big stipulation matches in WWE. Take a giant cage that encompasses the entire ringside area, put a roof on it and put two (or more) wrestlers in it for a fight to the finish.
The first Hell in a Cell match, Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker at In Your House: Badd Blood in 1997, was an instant classic. One of the best cage matches in WWE history, it features amazing performances from both men, with both playing their roles perfectly: Michaels is terrified by The Undertaker, who stalks him around the cage and picks him apart.
Hell in a Cell matches have changed over time depending on the nature of WWE when they take place. At one point they got very big bump/"stunt show"-heavy, then they became bloodbath old-school cage matches when WWE cut down on big bumps.
When WWE banned blood as part of going TV-PG, stunts were worked back in. Nowadays, they're somewhere in between style-wise, just without blood.
Unfortunately, with an annual Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event now on the calendar, the matches just...happen as opposed to being the culminations of major feuds. Still, they can be great, thrilling matches.
Like any wrestling staple, there's a bunch of interesting trivia about Hell in a Cell, and I racked my brain to think of five of those factoids that you may not know about.
